Benchijigua: Echoes of the Gomero Whistled Language

A tribute to the history and indigenous culture of the Canary Islands.

The name of this ship, and that of all the vessels in our Fred. Olsen Express fleet, pays tribute to the history and indigenous culture of our land. Would you like to know where the name Benchi Express comes from?

The name Benchi is a diminutive of Benchijigua and stems from our closeness, familiarity and affection for the island of La Gomera. As the younger sibling of the Benchijigua Express, this vessel embodies our daily commitment to the people of La Gomera, linking their shores under a ‘caressing’ name  -the original meaning of the Greek word hypokoristikós.
