Pioneers in maritime safety with artificial intelligence

Thermal cameras and fast ferries: advanced maritime and marine protection.

We are the first shipping company in the world to integrate artificial intelligence for the early detection of objects and marine wildlife at a great distance, increasing navigation safety and improving response times in the event of contingencies.

To achieve this, we have developed an R&D&I project in collaboration with Aeromarine and SEA.AI thermal cameras, which has resulted in an innovative early detection system currently implemented across our entire fleet of fast ferries. This breakthrough has been made possible by combining cutting-edge technologies provided by two key partners:

AEROMARINE

In collaboration with Aeromarine, we have developed an innovative maritime surveillance system that combines radar technology and high-definition video processing software.

This R&D project enables improved early and differentiated detection of floating objects at sea, including marine fauna, while also providing accurate tracking of obstacles and contributing to accident prevention.

SEA.AI
It brings artificial intelligence to the project. This system uses high-resolution thermal and daytime cameras, capable of operating at night, to detect floating objects.

The information collected is processed and compared with its database to provide the most comprehensive interpretation of the vessel's surroundings. This is displayed in real time on the bridge, alerting the crew and colour-coding objects if they are in the ship's path.

Through this project, we are taking another step towards safer and more innovative navigation. Safety and sustainability are two of the pillars that guide each of our crossings.

Certification and recognition

The project is certified within the ‘FORVISION’ framework as a technological innovation and has been awarded the opPORTunity 2024 prize for Technological Innovation by the port authority of Santa Cruz de Tenerife. This award reinforces our commitment to safety and innovation in the maritime sector.

At Fred. Olsen Express, we have launched an R&D&I project in collaboration with Aeromarine, Teledyne Flir and DSPNOR to develop a pioneering system that combines advanced radar, thermal cameras and high-definition software. This innovation has enabled us to extend the detection of floating objects to two nautical miles, thereby enhancing the safety of our crossings.

The pilot test of this pioneering system was carried out on the Bajamar Express trimaran. This early detection system for surface objects combines radar, thermal cameras and artificial intelligence software, which has enabled us to improve the surveillance of our fleet and the protection of marine wildlife.

This system has demonstrated a significant improvement in visibility during navigation, enabling automated perimeter surveillance and obstacle detection, with the aim of preventing collisions and protecting marine wildlife in particular. Thanks to the positive results obtained, it has been implemented on all our inter-island routes operated by large fast ferries.

This is how the pilot tests went on the Bajamar Express

SEA.AI was inspired by anti-collision technology developed for the automotive industry. It was initially tested in the maritime world on board small crewed sailing boats competing in round-the-world regattas, and Fred. Olsen Express's commitment to R&D&I has opened up a new field for the development of safety systems for commercial vessels.

Technical conference on Measures for the Protection of Cetaceans

We held a Technical Conference on Measures for the Protection of Cetaceans aboard the Bajamar Express in Tenerife. A space for collaboration between administrations, science and the maritime sector to share advances and technologies such as Fred. Olsen Vigía, our system based on sensorisation, AI and big data for the early detection of marine fauna.

Learn more about our environmental commitment

Throughout our history, we have worked and collaborated on numerous projects aimed at minimising the impact that our activity could have on the marine environment, with a special focus on testing technology for preventive purposes. This commitment gave rise to the first initiatives that preceded the implementation of the current detection cameras. At Fred. Olsen Express, we publish our environmental report, In Harmony with the Sea, which details more than 90 projects and measures underway to reduce the impact of our activity and move towards sustainability. We are aligned with the UN Sustainable Development Goals through four areas: technological innovation in the fleet, service efficiency, collaboration and environmental awareness, and volunteering in marine and coastal conservation actions.
