FRED. OLSEN PRESENTS THE TRANSFORMATION OF A FAST FERRY PROPELLED WITH LNG

Fred. Olsen presents the project of the transformation of one of her Fast Ferry to be propelled with LNG inside the conference on the use of LNG as marine fuel organized by  GAINN projects.

The 16th of March Fundación Valenciaport will hold the conference “LNG as Marine Fuel: the Moment of Truth”, at the premises of the Port Authority of Valencia, as part of the GAINN projects, which are co-financed by the Connecting Europe Facility program of the European Commission.

 

The conference, which will include the participation of important international speakers, will cover the following issues: the main obstacles for using Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) as a marine fuel; the logistics costs associated with the LNG supply chain; the opportunities offered by the distribution model on a small scale; existing options for increasing demand for fuel and the latest technical innovations in the LNG market. In addition, the conference will present the case studies of some of the first users of LNG in the shipping industry, the latest technological advances for the storage of this fuel and the conversion of a high speed ropax to be LNG fueled by Fred. Olsen.

GAINN PROYECTS:

Both GAINN projects (GAIN4SHIP INNOVATION and GAINN4MOS) have a common objective: to provide the legislators of the European Union’s member states (EU), and the port authorities and ship owners operating in several European countries of the Mediterranean and Portugal, with support to comply with environmental regulations in the most efficient manner.

GAINN projects include tasks aimed at analysing and deciding what choice is best when a port offers an LNG supply service, tasks aimed at designing and building such supply infrastructure, engineering studies about ship adaptations that would reduce their CO2 emissions to the desired level, pilot tests aimed at readapting and improving various types of ships and tasks designed to retrofit or build new ships that would meet this regulatory framework.

GAINN projects will foster a cleaner, safer and sustainable marine and land transportation by reducing operating costs associated with fuel consumption by 30%, thanks to the ship’s retrofitted prototypes. Furthermore, carbon dioxide emissions will be reduced by approximately a 20% and sulfur emissions by 80%.

GAINN4SHIP INNOVATION comprises of the following partners: Fred. Olsen, S.A.; Valenciaport Foundation (coordinator); The International Center for Numerical Methods in Engineering – CIMNE, the Port Authority of Valencia and the Ministerio de Fomento – Dirección General de la Marina Mercante (Ministry of Development - Directorate General for Merchant Shipping).

GAINN4MOS involves 20 partners from six EU member states (Slovenia, Italy, France, Croatia, Portugal and Spain).
