una gran cantidad de residuos
durante su visita.
Hasta ahora, esos residuos
eran considerados un proble-
ma, pero ¿realmente lo son?.
En una economía cada vez
más deficitaria en materias
primas, los residuos deben
entenderse como valiosos re-
cursos y su buena gestión re-
presenta al mismo tiempo un
reto y una oportunidad.
La Fundación Canarias Reci-
cla apuesta por ello. En Ca-
narias ya existen ejemplos de
industrias de reciclado que
han logrado generar empleo y
riqueza en las Islas. Para con-
seguirlo, es necesario apoyar
de manera firme a la Indus-
tria del reciclaje canaria. Un
sector innovador capaz de
competir a nivel internacio-
nal y diversificar nuestra eco-
nomía. La economía verde no
es el futuro, es hoy una reali-
dad que hay que aprovechar.
the Canaries, the problem
posed by waste is made
worse for various reasons.
Firstly, our territory is small,
and therefore land is a limited
resource. Secondly, we are
islands; therefore, suffering
the twofold cost of insularity
and distance from the large
treatment plants. Lastly, the
Canaries are a territory with
pronounced biodiversity, with
an environmental wealth which
attracts millions of tourists
who, in turn, generate a great
quantity of waste during their
visit.
Up to now, that waste has been
considered a problem, but is
that really true? In an economy
which is increasingly scarce
in terms of raw materials,
waste should be looked at as
a valuable resource, and its
sound management is both a
challenge and an opportunity.
Fundación Canarias Recicla
is committed to this. In the
Canaries, recycling plants
already exist which have
managed to create jobs and
wealth for the Islands. In
order to do this, there must
be strong support for the local
recycling industry. This is an
innovating sector, which can
compete internationally and
diversify our economy. Green
economy is not something of
the future; today, it is a reality
worth looking into.
