The Benchijigua Express, the most modern type of trimaran in the world, together with the fast catamaran ferry, Bonanza Express, have joined forces to create a link as direct as a bridge between the islands of Tenerife and La Gomera. The crossing takes just 40 minutes and brings travellers right into the capital of the island, San Sebastián, a small, rather cosy town, full of history, renowned for being the last port of call for Christopher Columbus on his journey to the New World.
But this island has much more to offer - a rich array of gastronomic delights, the friendliness of the local people and a magical, unspoilt atmosphere found nowhere else in the Canaries. The rock formations of La Gomera give the impression of almost having chiselled by hand to create a spectacular and varied landscape made up of deep gorges and scarped peaks. In the National Park of Garajonay the rich flora, primarily a mixture or laurels and heathers dating back to the tertiary age, combine with the low clouds and fog to form impressive forests with a bewitched, even spooky feel about them. These rare laurisilva forests are so unique that they even form part of the UNESCO's World Heritage List.
The island of La Gomera is an ideal destination for a relaxed stay, but is also well worth a day trip, made possible by the 5 daily return trips offered by Fred.Olsen Express from Tenerife.
